The island of Sint Maarten may soon no longer belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The island has been damaged by Hurricane Irma, that reconstruction costs more than the whole island is worth. That says chief economist Jochem Rutte.
"Economically, it is irresponsible to start reconstruction. If you look at the financial picture, then those huge costs to the rest of the Kingdom are not explained. At one point you should also take your loss: it was a beautiful island, but now it’s just finished.
However, Rutte advises to let the residents keep what’s left over. "They can then get started without interference from the Netherlands. A prettier moment for decolonization can not be imagined, right? "
The government’s economic adviser wishes the inhabitants of Sint Maarten the best.
